Motivation in movement

When are we done with an image?
Today I've been working hard to improve my editing process. The only way to improve is to try new things. So I'm asking you all... where do start your editing. When you look at an image what are the questions you ask yourself? What does this photograph need? How often do you change the order of your editing?

Here's what I've worked on today :)

  1. Good questions!
When I look at an image, I ask myself.. "Where do I want the center of attention to be? Where do I need more or less detail? What can I do to make this photograph look as vibrant and sharp as it did when I was standing in front of it with my own eyes?"
I don't think I change up my order much, unless I learn something that I have to add to my routine.
Although, the other day I found myself playing around and ended up with something I really loved, so it's good to play, experiment, adventure!

  2. I use the same basic steps for each job.

    1) what is the image for?

    2) crop to the most essential part of the image and work out

    3) color correction / retouch

    4) alterations; i.e. object removal, masking

    5) enhancements, filters, sharpening

    6) is it good enough for the appropriate output?

when you get to six and the answer is no, then you change something. I've found time is a photographer's greatest asset, and expediting the workflow process ultimately makes you money

  3. I like Ryans no.2 and Lindsey's comment:"What can I do to make this photograph look as vibrant and sharp as it did when I was standing in front of it with my own eyes?"
    Keep it real.
That pollen shot is so beautiful and fanciful.
I wish I could see more of those.

  4. thanks guys. i love what all of you said. keep questioning everything. it gets to closer to the answers you are looking for no matter what they may be. Art is the process of making it. not the end result.
